You know your organization has made it to the big time when your acronym is recognizable. WSIG is still new, not yet synonymous with the Women's Social Impact Group at the J. Why? Because of the station identification break of the pandemic.
It was the beginning of 2020 when a couple of friends and I went to a cafe to simmer over what a women's group at the J might look like. We all liked the J's annual support of the Hypothermia Prevention Shelter, and in general liked the possibilities of uniting women to multiply our social impact. That led to Laurie Albert welcoming us under Community Engagement's purview, and scheduling a meeting to gauge interest and hear ideas.
The first meeting of the WSIG was held on March 2, 2020. Very soon afterwards, the only thing everyone was talking about was the terrible impact of CV19, the Corona virus. Universally, people were apart, business as usual was no more. But through the innovation of easy-to-use conference software, our fledgling group carried on. We recognized that the virus magnified the need for helpers. So far, our group’s efforts to engage the commUNITY has helped FACET's provide food and toiletries, contributed a trolley of pantry items to a local food bank, and donated home goods to an organization that furnishes apartments for families transitioning from homelessness.
Our most recent meeting, held in July 2021 was rife with project ideas, from collecting comfort items for hospital patients to starting a composting effort at the J. Over the next year, with more involvement, WSIG will make a name for itself while improving the lives of those in need in our commUNITY.
