During the pandemic, the Pozez JCC has hosted several blood drives to help our County replenish its critically low supply. Every day, blood donors help patients of all ages: accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those battling cancer. In fact, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood.
The blood donation process from the time you arrive until the time you leave takes about an hour. The donation itself is only about 8-10 minutes on average.
Note: The Red Cross is allowing anyone who has received either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines (AstraZeneca and Janssen/J&J have a two week waiting period) to donate without a waiting period. It is encouraged that you bring your vaccine card (or a virtual copy of it) to show the nurse but it is not required. All that is required is to know which manufacturer was administered.
The American Red Cross has updated its pandemic safety protocols in alignment with CDC and OSHA guidance. Here's what you need to know:
Individuals will continue to be screened for COVID19 antibodies. In addition, we are pleased to share that beginning April 1, 2021, the Red Cross expanded its testing to include sickle cell trait screening on all donations from self-identified African American donors. This additional screening helps the Red Cross identify compatible blood types more quickly to help sickle cell patients and provide African American donors an additional health insight during a time when health information has never been more important.
