Roots, Rhythm, and Resilience: Musical Intersections of Black and Jewish Diasporas

This four-part virtual lecture and concert series explores the cultural, musical, and political intersectionality of Black and Jewish cultures throughout the centuries. Topics will include the effects of their forcible migrations and marginalizations, common struggles for equality, musical assimilations, and quests for bridging the gaps. Presented in hounor of Black History Month.

February 3        Roots - folk songs & indigenous cultural songs: Yiddish, Jewish, Sephardic, African, Afro-Caribbean
February 10      Resilience - Spirituals, Freedom Songs, Call and Response, Old Testament Commonalities
February 17      Taking The American Stage - Vaudeville, Tin Pan Alley, Cabaret, Musical Theatre and the Civil Rights era
February 24      All That Jazz - Jazz standards influenced by Black and Jewish composers
