History Right in Your Backyard!

The Commonwealth of Virginia is steeped in history, dating back to the English explorers settling Jamestown. Northern Virginia is equally known for its rich past, hailing the first president of the country, Native American hunting camps and settlements, plantations and other noted buildings and homes, Civil and Spanish-American War campsites, planned towns and communities, and seats of government. One can find many monuments and national landmarks dedicated to the past in the area.

Join us for this two-part program on local history. The first session took us on a trip around Fairfax County and the City of Fairfax. This program focuses on a significant Union outpost and tales of its residents, not too far from the Pozez JCC!

Register for one, or both sessions.

ALI: A Quick Trip Through Fairfax History (on Zoom)
Tuesday, January 19, 11am-12:15pm
Featuring Susan Inskeep Gray, Director/Curator/Visitor Services Manager, Office of Historic Resources, City of Fairfax, Fairfax Museum and Visitor Center

Fairfax County, named for Thomas the Sixth Lord of Fairfax, was originally settled by eastern Virginia and Maryland farmers in the early 1700s. The area was a crossroads of conflict during the American Civil War, later becoming a hub for dairy production and commerce in the late 19th Century. WW II spurred rapid growth in housing and population in the 20th Century which led to the area becoming a major center for business and eventually IT, as well as companies that support the federal government. Amid a bustling metropolitan area, Fairfax County and the City of Fairfax are both rich in history and heritage. Many residents and visitors enjoy a small-town atmosphere and an abundance of cultural, educational, and recreational pursuits.

Join Ms. Gray on a brief journey through 300 years of history to discover things you never knew about the area, but wish you had!

ALI: Diary on Walls:  Stories of Union Soldiers at Historic Blenheim (on Zoom)
Tuesday, January 26, 11am-12:15pm
Presented by Andrea Loewenwarter, Historic Blenheim and the Civil War Interpretive Center Site Manager

Historic Blenheim is a circa 1859 central-hall plan Greek Revival-style brick farmhouse built by Albert Willcoxon just prior to the Civil War. It is nationally significant for the voluminous quantity and quality of examples of Civil War inscriptions. More than 122 signatures, pictographs, games, and thoughts were left on the house walls by Union soldiers during their occupation of the Fairfax Court House area in 1862-63. This "diary on walls" provides insight into typical soldier life and extends to the effect of this war on local residents--such as the Willcoxon family--and free and enslaved people of African descent. Join Ms. Loewenwarter to see up close the ‘diary’ entrees and learn about the newest investigative research on the home’s graffiti.
