Pozez JCC-JAFI Shiri Rahamim Shlichut Program

Pozez JCC-JAFI Shiri Rahamim Schlichut Program

Israel is a fascinating contrast between the ancient and the modern and is the spiritual and physical center of the Jewish people. As we celebrate its rich history, traditions, and deep dimension, we are thrilled to work with our Community Shlicha, who will help us explore and discover what makes Israel so special! Our Shlicha will reach deeper within our community to educate and increase awareness, knowledge, and pride about Israel’s history, culture, and current events, and to promote a better understanding of Israel and its ideals. The program also serves as a catalyst for igniting Jewish journeys, encouraging people to learn more about Judaism and Israel, and finding their own way to connect to the Jewish homeland.

If you have any questions about how you can become more engaged in the Pozez JCC Jewish Agency for Israel’s Shlichim program, please contact Laurie Albert

Welcome Our New Shaliach

My name is Shy and I am your new Shaliach at the Pozez JCC.  I am 35 years old and have lived in Jerusalem my whole life. I hold a B.A. in Education and Theater and have translated this into my everyday work with Shlichim and with youth in Israel, coordinating a national youth leadership program, working with youth movements, and training young adults by providing them with educational tools. In addition, I do a lot of stage work in musicals and various theatrical events (acting, writing, directing and producing).

After serving in the IDF for 4 years in a special operational communications unit as a commander and in a role of an operations officer, I started my journey with the world of Shlichut in Jewish summer camps in the US.

For the past 13 years, I was a Shaliach at different summer camps (Camp Tel Noar in NH, Camp Kimama in NY, Camps Airy and Louise in MD and Jcamps of Owings Mills in Baltimore). I’ve held a variety of positions ranging from Head of the Israeli delegation, Unit head, Song Leader, Head of Jewish life, Coordinator of Leadership Trainings and more. Throughout the years I’ve worked for the Jewish Agency for Israel as part of the training staff for summer Shlichim as a camps' coordinator, candidates' coordinator, educator and the Director of Trainings for Shlichim. I have had the privilege of working with the different Jewish movements and organizations in the North American camping world.

My biggest passion is my music. I am a singer-songwriter, recording and performing all over Israel and in the U.S., and have brought that passion into my work with Jewish communities as a song leader – at Jewish summer camps and in Israel for different groups and organizations.

I have an older brother, two sisters (one older and one younger), three lovely nieces and two wonderful parents.

I am very excited to become a part of your community, bringing myself and learning from all of you so that together, we can create special and meaningful experiences. I look forward to meeting you soon!

Our History

Ten years ago, bringing an Israeli representative to our community to deepen the connections between Northern Virginians and Israel was just a dream. Thanks to the vision and financial support of several dedicated community leaders and the efforts and commitment of the Center, the Pozez JCC-Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) Community Shlichim Program was launched in 2007.

Over the past eleven years, we have been fortunate to host seven creative and passionate shlichim:

  • Shiri Rahamim (2007 - 2009)
  • Michaela Cohen (2009 - 2011)
  • Yael Ingel (2011 - 2013)
  • Ido Rakovsky (2013 - 2014)
  • Dana Kalishov (2014 - 2015)
  • Na'ama Gold (2015 - 2017)
  • Liat Lisha (2017 - 2018)

Each representative brought a unique perspective to the position and became a valued member of our community. Whether teaching a weekly Café Ivrit at a synagogue, helping to coordinate a community-wide Yom HaShoah program, facilitating discussions at the Jewish Film Festival, developing Israel programming on the campus of George Mason University, or having meaningful one-on-one conversations about Israeli society with community members, our shlichim have a proven track record of connecting Israel to our community.

As we say l’hitraot (until we meet again) to Liat, we thank her for sharing her passion and touching so many lives.
