WSIG: Snack Pack Give Pack Project

Melissa W. on Wednesday, December 15, 2021

Every year before Chanukah starts, I have the best of intentions to make the holiday both a joyous holiday of gifts, but also a time to think of others by "giving a gift." In some years, on the fourth night of Chanukah, I have loaded my kids in the car with Tzedakah boxes in tow to the toy store. Each child would pick out a toy to purchase with money from their Tzedakah boxes to donate to a child in need--maybe to Children's National Hospital or Toys for Tots.

Last year, we were stuck at home during the holidays and this created an opportunity for a new tradition. We ordered a bunch of snacks in bulk from Costco and set up an assembly line in our living room assembling snack packs for kids to be distributed through Lorton Community Action Center. It was simple and my kids had a blast making them!

Even though Chanukah is over, the need is great and doing a mitzvah is always in season. It is important to talk with your family about community service and a great project to assemble snack packs together.

Here are the directions and suggested snack pack items:

1 gallon zip lock bag

4 non-perishable snacks (granola bars, apple sauce cups, peanut butter crackers)

1 shelf stable juice or milk boxed drink

Step 1. Decide how many snack packs you want to make and purchase the same amount of each item to make the packs.

Step 2. Create an assembly line and start packing!

Step 3. When your packs are ready, load them into the car. You can drop them off at LCAC (hours here) or in the collection bin at the Pozez JCC.
