The reason to donate blood is simple: Pikuach Nefesh (Saving a Life) a fundamental principle in Jewish law and a core Jewish value. The pandemic’s impact has caused blood supply and donations to drop to a dangerously low level. Now more than ever, our commUNITY needs help from the J family by donating blood to ensure blood products are readily available for patients.
If you are still hesitant about giving blood, here are five reasons why the simple act of donating blood, a mitzvah (good deed), is so important:
1. It is an act of kindness and compassion.
Donating blood truly is a “gift of life” that a healthy person can give to others in our community who are sick or injured. Just one donation can help save up to three lives.
2. The need is great.
Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. The pandemic has caused a consistent and growing need. Despite this high demand, fewer people are donating right now. Blood is always needed for treatment of accident victims, cancer patients, hemophiliacs, and surgery patients.
3. It only takes 10 minutes to donate.
The entire process takes about an hour, with about 10 minutes of that time being the actual blood donation. The need for blood is endless and in less than an hour, donors can add years of life to someone who is in need.
4. You may need a blood donation in the future.
Statistics have shown that at least 25% of people will need blood at least once in their lifetime. The life you save could be your own.
Donating blood is a selfless act towards others in our community.
